Dr. Miracle’s Temple & Nape Gro Balm

UPDATE: Following the discussion you can clearly see in the comments, I do not recommend this product. Definitely not for everyone, and I haven’t used it in awhile myself. Ingredient list is as follows:

Water Deionized (Aqua), Octyldodeceth-20, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Glycerin, Oleth-2, Oleth-10, Menthol, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Panthenol, DMDM Hydantoin, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Simethicone, Polysorbate 80, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Zinc Ricinoleate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Cetyl Lactate, Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera Extract), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D), Isopulegol, Menthoxypropanderiol, Fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate, Citral, Citronellol, d-Limonene, Geraniol, Hexyl Cinnamic Aldehyde, Linalool, Caramel, CI 19140, CI 15510, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, BHA

Let me start with this: I don’t believe in miracles. I believe in hard work.

With that being said, let me introduce the first new product in my arsenal of the beginning of hair regrowth: Dr. Miracle’s Temple & Nape Gro Balm. I started applying this as the directions stated: twice daily for 30 days. As of this writing, I am on day 3. I apply one time in the morning and one time before bedtime.

The reviews for this smelly stuff ranged from “this crap made my scalp AND hair break” to “I saw hair growing in like wildfire within the first week!” I was with a thick-haired friend of mine at the drugstore yesterday when he recommended this–I would’ve never thought to pick it up on my own otherwise. He used it because it didn’t seem to work for his relatively thin-haired mother. So far, so good. No adverse effects on my tough-as-nails scalp. The tingling sensation feels nice and refreshing too, even though it sure takes me an awful long time (ranging from minutes to hours) to “feel it.” The smell of this thing however, is a another story…both positive and negative reviews could agree with that.

The second I opened the little jar of goo, the smell hit me like a walrus attached to an anvil falling from the sky. “I do not want my hair smelling like the depths of a sewer for a month,” I thought. Man, it is nauseating. I employed my reluctant brother to apply it to my nape’s scalp at night while I take care of mornings. Two pairs of eyes are better than one when it comes to monitoring hair growth on the back of my head. “If it smells this bad though,” he began, “it’s gotta work.” I suppose he does have a point there.

I’m pretty optimistic about the results. I will post a comprehensive review in 30 days, the length of time the product suggests. Of course, if anything miraculous (d’ohoho) were to happen between now and then, I will mention it in my updates.

If my hair does begin to grow like wildfire though, I guess it will be my little miracle.

If my hair does begin to grow like wildfire though, I guess it will be my little miracle.

  1. I used Dr. Miracle’s Temple & Nape Gro Balm, and after two days my edges were itching, flaking, dry and crusty. The tips of my ears looked burned, and at night I would wake up with my head itching terribly!!! I threw my bottle away and began using 100 percent aloe vera gel on my edges in hope it would heal. A class action law suit should be brought against Dr. Miracle, who by the way does not list his hazardous ingredients on the package of his so called gro balm.

    • Hey Marion. Yeah, I definitely read reviews stating everything you mentioned here. I have this nagging suspicion that this product is probably not sensitive-scalp friendly. The ingredients aren’t listed on the actual jar of the product, but all of them are listed on the little box it comes in. I’ll post them when I do my review. I’ve been using the smelly stuff since I wrote my post (I’ve admittedly skipped just a few days), but I never had any itching, flaking, dry crusty scalp/burned ears. And I apply it heavily on my scalp (I try to avoid the hair) and definitely keep it on at night. My nape hadn’t been growing since February (when I chopped off all the damaged ends), but there definitely has been more progress this month than there have been since the entire summer. Sometimes I don’t even feel the tingle you’re supposed to feel with this thing. I don’t think it was made for all kinds of heads. There should be a warning for people with sensitive scalps or something, I think.

    • I had the same awful experience over a year ago! Did you find any products that helped to get rid of the dry flakes? I’m still suffering with them till this day!

  2. I agree. They should have a more gentle or “natural” formula for those who wear their hair natural. But after my experience, I would never buy another Dr Miracle product again. Is this “Dr. Miracle” even an African American?

    • Haha. I don’t even know. I assumed “Dr. Miracle” was African-American, but I should look it up–my hair is worn natural. I never even heard of the products before I saw them at my local beauty store/CVS. I didn’t even know they had relaxers. Like I said, my hair’s growing a teeny bit, but it sure isn’t nothing “miraculous.” I’m happy it jumpstarted it at least. I’m not gonna lie when I say it keeps my hair pretty soft/my scalp pretty moisturized. It just smells awful (I think I got used to it, though).

There should definitely be a warning or something because the number of people that reported what you did is pretty ridiculous. Those are some serious adverse reactions for something that’s supposedly for “all kinds of hair!”

  3. I wld really like to know wht the end result was for you (i.e. after ur 30# days trial)

For me – after about 3 days of using the Temple Balm both mornings and evening at my temple and all along my hairline, I noticed a small lump under my skin close to my ear. Strange but I thought nothing of it. My head also itched like nothing on this earth around my hairline where I was rubbing the balm. Little bumps took over my name and I had “sores” at my temple… A day later I noticed that my temples were swollen slightly (going towards my forehead). I stopped using the temple balm. NEXT day I woke up and my entire forehead is SWOLLEN. I’m not exaggerating nor am I trying to be funny! My friends were calling me Quasimodo, I looked that bad! It is def STRANGE. WIll be going to the Dr’s on Monday morning if the swelling does not go down!

    • OMG. That is awful. I hope the doctor’s visit goes well for you. 😦

So, to be honest, I haven’t used the gro balm for a very long time. I’m pretty sure I was done with it after the 30ish days due to laziness, mostly. But I never had any of the symptoms you and the other madam mentioned earlier. Whether my super-short nape grew because of that or not, I am not sure. It could’ve been attributed to the way I washed and conditioned my hair. I don’t know why, but it’s no longer super short anymore.

The ONLY thing about it is that my nape’s hair is hella less textured than the rest of my hair. It can’t hold braids, that’s for sure. It almost seems permed, but it’s not. When I think about it, I wonder if that has ANYTHING to do with me using the gro balm initially. Hidden texturizer?

Please let me know what happens at the doc. It sounds like an allergic skin reaction. Now I really need to find that box so I can post the ingredients. It’s been a good while since I touched my blog, but I know so much more now than I did when I started…so I need to start from scratch. I’m going to presume this gro-balm is not for sensitive heads. But after all that, I wonder if it’s good at all.

    • Nikki, you are not exaggerating. I just came back from the doctor myself. My ears look scorched, my forehead is so swollen that it is now protruding…my eyes are swollen…and i have flaky rashes where ever i applied it. i am done, i look like an avatar character. I am happy for those it has helped but no one product is able to work for everyone. It’s Tuesday and the doctor gave me the rest of the week off to allow the swelling to go down.

      • Hi Dee,

I’m still surprised at these severe adverse reactions still happening to women such as yourself, and yet a class action hasn’t been brought up yet. It sounds so terrible.

I hope you heal up soon! I chucked my container ASAP after hearing all of this. It’s just so weird I never got so much a hint of sores or anything like that. I’m going to update this sooner or later.

    • I am experiencing the same thing, swelling in the scalp, burning in the scalp, forhead swollen, ears burned and hairline itching like crazy. Has anyone found a class action lawsuit? This is unhumane and Dr Miracle’s products should be taken off the market

      • I was just told not to use Dr. Miracle any more by my beautician. I am having the same problem I have small bumps around the base of my head flaky and itching.my hair has broke out more than what it already was. Something need to be done.

  4. OMG I experienced the exact same thing as Nikki! I have never experienced anything like this except when I was perming my hair. My hair is all antural now, for 3 years. Someone recommended the product to help grow my temple hair back but I’ll probably be bald altogether now with the scabs and oozing sores I’m getting. Someone should bring a suit against this manufacturer, seriously! This is unconscionable!!!

    • That is terrible. Usually, I am incredibly wary about using products I’ve never used before, so I read pages and pages of reviews about this thing. It’s clearly not suited for everyone and it seriously needs to be investigated. I never repurchased it and I sure don’t plan to get anything from that line again. Like I mentioned before, it seems that the natural hair at my nape is more “relaxed” than the rest of my hair, but that’s about it. It’s been like a year since I used it.

    • you are right on with the “oozing sores” and they smell gross as a matter of fact I wore a wig to my doctor’s appointment because of how horrible and disfigured my face looks and after I got home and removed the wig, it smells like inflammation. It doesn’t work for sensitive skin, I’ll say that much. I thought my ordeal was unique and i’ve been searching the net all day for negative reactions to this thing, now I know I am not crazy.

  5. Dr. Miracle should be banned !!!!! This product was recommended to me to use, the following day after using this product there were tiny bumps all over my forehead. The day after they began to ooze with pus. Today the 3rd day as I sit here my forehead is SWOLLEN…. HUGE !!!! I almost did not recognize myself this morning… I am urging EVERY-ONE PLZZZ STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT !!!!!!!

  6. Dr Miracle temple and nape balm broke out my hair line in soars, scabs oozing and it is covered in flakes, and now my forehead is swollen and ears are swollen. I am at work freaking out…I am hoping it will go away but instead the swelling is working it’s way down to my face, thank God I have bangs to cover my hair line and forehead. Please don’t buy this product, it will do more harm than good.

  7. Lakeia,
Hey everyone all of you are so rite about this product, I have the sores on my forehead and neck its oozing. I used this balm on Sunday and Monday I was on fire. I’ve just come back from the doctor because of the swollen face and neck. There should be a suit againt this company

    • I agree, this company is messy. I’m sure tons of people have complained about these particular sores and there is no warning on the packages.

  8. I am so relieved that I am not the only one. I thought i was going crazy. This product was recommened to me by a friend to help me with my hairline. she swore by it because it had worked miracles for her. after using it, it felt like i had been burnt from leaving on the relaxer for too long. i had ozzing sores, was and still am in absolute pain. i would wake up in the middle of the night itching and in pain. ive stopped using it and have washed my hair many times but i still feel it. my scalp is discoloured (burnt) and Ive actually lost more hair.

i seem to have reacted badly to it. all of you with the similar experience are quite right-there is non warning on the pack.

i am in pain and absolutely frustrated

  9. OMG….this has to be Satans balm from Hell. I have hair loss. I useta have a thick healthy head of hair and its’ all gone. I will be suing and still searching for a Class Action Suit against Dr. Miracle.

    • Let me know if you find a class action suit going, I will be searching too. I began using Dr. Miracle’s Temple and Nape Gro Balm and it seemed to work initially. Then my scalp began to itch terribly and scales began to appear around my nape and temples. Additionally, my hair fell out in these areas! I went to my dermatologist who prescribed medication for me to use. I have at least 3 friends that have had similar experiences…the end result for everyone I spoke to about this product was hair loss.

      • Please let me know of a class action,I still have my pictures n the email I sent them they never responded this Dr.miracle was anight mare for me, all the sides of my hair is gone can’t were it n a ponytail n it is very thin.

      • Hi, I had the exact same reaction over a year ago and the dry flakes I got as a result of this horrible product still remains. Can anyone recommend a product that helped to get rid of the dry scales/flakes

  10. this has happened to me I used the shampoo, medicated hair treatment hot hair grow and strengthing cream I had the whole works thinking it would help with growth only to have a nightmare a month later, the feeling it part I thought was good only to wake up with a burning feeling like if I was getting a perm, my head started hurting pain was very bad itching drastically, scabs around the front and back of hair line bumps all over was oozing.I washed my hair and it burned even more, all front hair and back hair lost, went to the doctor they gave me a shampoo and it still itched and burned for a week finally put some shea butter around the rim of my hair to soothe it, this has been a nightmare. Now I’m left with all this damage and the cold part of it is I never had perm or press my hair it was all natural virgin hair for this to happen to me. I have called lawyers only for them to say it needs to be third and second degree burns, to me the bald spots and burning should be sufficient enough, there should be a class action against them and there product taken off the market, all in that order, very frustrated.

  11. I used this product for two days, i bought it Friday afternoon, used it in the evening, Saturday morning and evening , and Sunday i could only do morning. I thought I had done something wrong until i read these reviews. My hairline was itchy like crazy and scabs and pimples with white heads formed, seriously I should have stuck to my castor oil. I hope i can get my $ back from the beauty store, even though the receipt says no refunds no returns. This product is harmful to say the least.
Day 3 Sunday, i had to do an egg and olive oil + honey deep conditioner, hopefully my scalp feels better after this cos it feels like its on fire.
I will go back to my castor oil after washing my hair.

To the people who said it worked for them, i beginning to wonder if Dr Miracles didn’t pay them, to write those reviews

  12. I dont know about oozing sores, but my scalp did burn. I was flaky and dry, I thought my ears were going to fall off. I gave it to some girl that i didn’t like ‘haha’

  13. I am so glad I have finally been able to isolate it to this product. Took me a few months, I thought I had a Shea allergy. No ma’am, it was this crap the whole time. Swollen ears, chin, and forehead. We should sue, this is ridiculous!

  14. I am sorry you ladies had a bad experience. Perhaps Dr. Miracle should have done more research on the product with various types of people. My experience was the opposite. I had a bald patch at the nape after taking out braids some years ago. TOTALLY bald spot. Nothing worked for months. I decided to try this Dr. Miracle thing. Hiar started sprouting in three days. I could not believe it because I read that hair takes 4 to 6 weeks to grow, but it was true, the grew in 3 days. Yesterday I visited a new hairdresser to have my hair rope twisted and I asked her not to braid too tightly because of the hair loss I had from the last time I had braided. I then said ‘can you guess what grew my hair back?’ she said ‘Dr. Miracle?’ I said, yes! how did you know? She said because it works for my clients. I feel it works for more people than it doesn’t. Please, can some more people with positive results tell the story? You will help a great deal of people.

  15. am soo gald am not the only one. i also used this product yesterday in the morning. and then today i decided to put teat tree oil instead on my edges and OMG!!! it burnt tlike nothing ive ever felt. after close examinnation i noticed that my skin had broken out into some pimple like things that were ooozing and once dry appear flaky- dont know how to even begin describing them. yep !!! am at work with an itchy and oozing hairline and there is nothing i can do about it till i get home to wash my hair. Its CRAP!!!!
    !!

  16. Temple and nape balm was recommended to me by my hair dresser and since I started using it. Y scalp start itching really bad I have more flakes like never before and worst my ears are scorched the back of my neck hurts and I can see Lumps on both side at thales back ok my neck my head feel soar …I came online to find people’s comments about the product and this is wha I find I’m so shock and hurt at the same time right now… Who is dr miracle where are they from and why don’t they tell people the products are not for everyone and save people these trouble and pain…

  17. I’m really thankful to god I searched the net and find this sight and all your comment it made me ran and wash my hair just now…thank you all ladies..god bless us all…

  18. Let me begin by saying I have been using this product for 4 months now . I am latin descend, but consider myself white due to my fine thin hair, and flair light skin. Only way you can tell I come from latin family is if I tan. (cool story)

Let me begin by saying those bumps, come from you not properly exofoliating your oily skin before applying TOO CLOSE TO YOUR FOREHEAD AND NAPE. Those bumps, little comedones , are dirt and oil trapped under the skin. Ive expirenced this before . I dont apply close to my skin, only my hairline and scalp all over. My hair has grown 1 inch a month, instead of half inch . I too got bumps and a red line on my ear that scaffed, ill explain to you .This product contains high.level of A and D and Aloe. Both agents known to make you peel and brake out in certain oily to combo mixed skin.

You fix the bumps issue, by cleansing your face right and using an astrigent. Witchhazel being my fav for all skin type or rose water. Many people dont wash behind their ears and are dirty a$$es. n
I love this product. Yes its oily, if you dont know how to use it .. If you use a tiny hint, meaning slight touch the product then you wont have any issues. I use a boar hair brush to brush it all over.

I love this product, my hair grew 5 inches in 4 months. My fine thinning hair was damaged due to bleaching playnium blonde. Give it a chance. Just.like when you change face wash, you may brake out because your skin has not adjusted to it. Braking out is preventable if you prep your skin right. Also i dont focus on my nape and hairline, on my scalp mostly. This product made me grow a nother hairline, i have to cut now into my bangs, but overall i feel i am nothing without this product. Also take biotin, vitamin A, D, E, and C. I take Iron, Enchinacea. I been 3 weeks with no vitamins, this product does grow your hair.

Also, if you dont want to use this product. The best alternative is A and D ointment. Same thing,.less mystery, it will GROW YOUR HAIR AT THE SAME PACE!!!! Hope this help. Stop being Ignorant. (excuse spelling I typed this with LG phone, not I Phone)

    • Very god explanation. I’ve been using it for a week and haven’t had any negative reactions thus far.

  19. Dr Miracles neeh :'(… So a friend from skoool recommended tht I should use this Dr Mirales ish bcz her th doctor has prescribed it to her. a friend said I should usw it bcz her aunt and I hv th same problem. 20. After using for two days, huge pimple like bumps on forehead and every where the cream touched. The glands by my right ear is swollen and my entire face is puffy. My eyelid is droopy and I feel an uncomfortable sensation on my face. I am going to see my primary care giver this morning–it is that scary. BTW, I don’t even have a sensitive scalp, so there must be something in this product that is harmful to use.

  21. It wouldn’t buy that again. It’s been six years and that mess took my hair out and didn’t nothing grow back at all. I was ball as jaybug.

  22. Dr. Miracles nape and temple balm is a disaster waiting in a jar to happen it gave me crusty bumps that burn really bad it was swollen red and irritated in just 3 days usage they need to be sued this product no way in hell is a miracle after my painful night of trying to sleep with my hurting burning head I google the ingredients and trust me its not good the one that starts with pheon is the stuff that is causesing the burning that stuff need to be taken off the shelfs its a hairl loss product that makes your hair worst.I now have bald spots and the hairIis completey gone in some spots onmy edges where hair once was there Iit was already thin now its gone I will never use anything from the line of products.

    • Get a class action started find a product liability lawyer. With this website alone we have testimonies. I tried calling them there’s no phone #to reach this company only email that they never respond to. I filed a consumer report on them. Once someone told me I should file a law suit it was to late, statue of limitation. I’m willing to testify I have pictures n the product that smells like a under cover perm, that’s why we get that tingling. Keep this group in the loop on your status. It is ridiculous how nothing is being done about this product. Mod

  23. omg!!!!! i am glad to know i am not the only one reacating to this product. i have a million and one rashes on my hairline. i have sores on my head, my hair i so itchy, my sclap is so dark. i used this product judt one night, and woke up to itchy, crusty, painful sclap. this product is very very very bad. i would never recommend it to any one

    • Since your case is new go to the doctor, then call a class action lawyer that handles product liability. I tried but there is a statue of two years. Mine happened in 2012. After filing a Consumer Report on dr.miracles they stated I waited to long, I didn’t know the law. But if there is a case just need someone that has just had this happen to them then we can move forward. Keep this page in the loop so that we can give are Testimony. I still have the product that took my edges n my pictures, n doctors report. I have to where wigs til this day. Mod

      • That is so bad I kept the nasty pain in bumps in the jar just in case they are still selling this disaster in a jar it need to be taken of the market for it really causes permanent hair lost and damage lets get em girls sue sue sue never using thosr products again none of them they have the nerve to have a hair perm kit.your whole head might fall off.

  24. omg!!!!! i am glad to know i am not the only one reacting to this product. i have a million and one rashes on my scalp. i have sores. this product had made my scalp is so dark. i used this product just one night, and woke up to itchy, crusty, painful scalp. this product is very very very bad. i would never recommend it to any one.

  25. We keep Commenting please someone start a class action you have up to 2years. When I realized I could sue it was already past the 2yr dead line like others I did not know where to start. Please call a lawyer that deals with Product Liability, and advise them of this website for back up. Try Morgan & Morgan, or just goggle Product Liability Lawyers. Dr Miracle needs to stop selling their products, or re vamped them so this does not keep happening to Consumers that what thicker, stronger hair and get mixed up with this product that the nape balm felt like a perm and completely and permeantly bald the WHOLE FRONT LINE OF MY HAIR. No ponytail’s, no braids only scarfs and wigs i feel very angry, humiliated and misguided by this product dr. miracle has put out.
